Ontario Takes Next Step in Expanding North York General Hospital Process begins to select a team for new inpatient care tower

TORONTO — The Ontario government is marking a key milestone in delivering high-quality hospital care for families in Toronto by issuing a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to select the team that will plan and design the new, expanded inpatient care tower at North York General Hospital (NYGH).
“The expansion of North York General Hospital is great news for Willowdale families and seniors,” said Stan Cho, Member of Provincial Parliament for Willowdale. “Our community has been growing at an enormous rate in recent years and the construction of over 300 new private patient rooms will go a long way in helping more local people connect to world class care when and where they need it.”
Issuing an RFQ is the first step in the process to select a qualified team to deliver this project that will ensure people in north central Toronto and southern York Region can continue to connect to the high-quality care they need in their growing communities.
The new patient tower includes eleven floors that will increase inpatient capacity by 22 per cent, allowing people and families in the region to connect to the care they need, where and when they need it.

- Two levels of underground parking, that will connect to NYGH’s existing building to enable a smoother flow of patients, staff, and hospital resources

- NYGH is one of Canada’s leading community academic hospitals and offers a wide range of acute care, ambulatory, and long-term care services across multiple sites.
- Over the next 10 years, Ontario’s investments will lead to nearly $50 billion in health infrastructure across the province, building 3,000 new beds in addition to over 3,500 critical care, acute and post-acute beds our government has added since 2020.
- The Ontario government is investing more than $228 million this year to support critical infrastructure upgrades and repairs at 129 hospitals and 58 community health care facilities across the province, a 10 per cent increase from last year. This included over $1.69 million to North York General Hospital in 2024-25.
